- I have been visiting the Outer Banks of North Carolina for over 20 years and still have not tired of this ribbon of sand's beauty and peacefulness. Born and raised in Iowa, along the banks of the Mississippi River, the Outer Banks is an exotic, magical place, much different from the prairie! Yet, there is no other place where I feel as comfortable and relaxed as I do on the islands.
